Reno Fire Marshal Bill Burney warned area residents Thursday a fire and burn hazard has forced
recall of MasterForce 3.6-volt cordless screwdrivers by the importer.
Burney said at least three reports have been made of fires, including one in which a person suffered burns to the hand and another in which someone suffered temporary hearing loss.
The screwdriver has no protective device on the lithium battery to prevent overheating, he said. The battery can overheat and ignite during charging, he said.
The recalled cordless screwdrivers are green and gray, with Masterforce printed on the top of the tool.
Anyone with the recalled screwdrivers should immediately stop using them and contact the company for replacement or refund information by calling toll-free at 866-458-2472 Monday through Friday, or visiting the firm's Web site at www.menards.com.
Information on fire prevention and safety at home and in businesses can be obtained by contacting the Reno Division of Fire Prevention at 334-2300.
