CALGARY — A Calgary company is recalling medical examination gloves sold in Canada following a report that a customer noticed insects embedded in the product.
But Brent Rusk, managing director for Hedy Canada, said Thursday he wasn't able to comment on the news report last month about what he described as an "apparent complaint" that a latex glove or gloves contained insects.
"We have sent written requests for those samples and have not received them," he said in an interview.
Hedy released a statement Thursday saying that it has suspended sales of the non-sterile lightly powdered latex medical examination gloves. The company said it has also sent recall information to dealers and suppliers, and is co-operating with Health Canada.
"The recall is based on our decision on a proactive basis to follow up on a complaint and take what we consider to be the best possible step we can, following our quality system," Rusk said.
Rusk indicated that no bugs were found in the company's inventory of gloves.
When asked if any irregularities were found, he replied: "Nothing that did not meet our specifications and those of Health Canada."
The recall is being done totally on a precautionary and voluntary basis, he added.
"While we agree with Health Canada that the direct risk to health is considered low, we have chosen to implement the voluntary recall as part of our quality control program," said the statement issued by Hedy.
"We take all quality issues very seriously and we feel this action is appropriate to address the concerns of our customers and the public."
