Weston Bakeries Ltd. has recalled some of its bread and buns sent to Alberta stores and institutions due to concerns that they could contain wood slivers.
Geoffrey Wilson, Weston's general vice-president of financial service in Toronto, said the problem originated with flour supplier Archer Daniels Midland of Mississauga, Ont.
Wilson said the supplier informed his company of a malfunction in its soft wheat mill that resulted in some wood slivers being detected in the whole wheat flour sent to Weston's Calgary bakery.
He said company officials called Alberta grocers, such as Safeway, Sobeys, Co-op, Westfair Foods, and 7-Eleven, asking them to return various bread and buns with best-before dates of Sept. 9, 10, 16, 17 and 18.
