Fresh cilantro distributed by NewStar Fresh Foods is being recalled by the California company due to fears it might be contaminated with salmonella.
In Canada, the company distributed the cilantro to stores in B.C., Alberta and Manitoba. However, the cilantro is not a suspect in B.C.'s current outbreak of salmonella, Ritinder Harry of the B.C. Centre for Disease Control said Thursday.
The B.C. outbreak is caused by a strain called salmonella enteritidis, while the California cilantro is associated with a different strain, salmonella typhimurium, Harry said.
The cilantro is packed in one-pound clear plastic bags under the brand names NewStar, Ready Set Serve and Cross Valley Farms. A full refund will be available to customers returning the cilantro, the company said in a statement issued Wednesday.
Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious or sometimes fatal infections in children or the frail and elderly.
The recall followed a routine sampling of the product by the Michigan department of agriculture. The company said the product was being recalled "out of an abundance of caution" as no consumer illnesses have been reported in connection with the cilantro.
