Confusion about recalled tomatoes

DENVER - Dozens of people have been sickened by salmonella poisoning linked to uncooked tomatoes in nine states, including Colorado. One popular restaurant is no longer serving tomatoes, which are a big part of the menu, just to be safe.

It seems there is some confusion about which kind of tomatoes may be to blame.

Qdoba restaurants are not using tomatoes until the source of the salmonella can be confirmed, but the Chili's restaurant in Glendale is still using tomatoes. Whole Foods in Cherry Creek has pulled tomatoes grown in Mexico but it is still selling others. King Soopers on Capitol Hill is selling Roma tomatoes grown in California.

Lab tests confirm 40 cases of salmonella in Texas and New Mexico came from the same strain of the illness. Those cases were tied to uncooked, large tomatoes.

Another 30 people have become ill with the same infection in Colorado, Arizona, Utah, Kansas, Idaho, Illinois and Indiana. The Centers for Disease Control is looking into whether tomatoes were responsible for those illnesses as well.
