Bonavita "Cabana" Drop Side Cribs Recalls Due To Entrapment and Strangulation Hazards

This recall involves Bonavita "Cabana" wooden drop side cribs with metal mattress supports. The cribs were manufactured from January 2006 through October 2008 and have production dates between 01 JAN 2006 and 31 OCT 2008. The model name, color, product order (PO) number, production date and other crib identifiers are printed on a label located on the inside bottom rail of the headboard or footboard. The cribs were sold in three finishes, antique white, classic cherry and montego brown. Cribs with other production dates are not affected by this recall.

The wooden crib slats can detach or break creating a gap, which can pose an entrapment and strangulation hazard to infants and toddlers.

LaJobi has received 16 incident reports of crib slat failures, including 10 reports of slats falling out of rails and 6 reports of slats breaking. No injuries have been reported.

Pontiac G8 Recalled

WASHINGTON — General Motors is recalling 35,038 Pontiac G8 sedans from model years 2008-'09 to correct potential defects with the brake lights and the tire pressure monitoring system.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the G8's brake pedal position switch may be incorrectly programmed, causing the brake lights to be continually illuminated. Also, the tire pressure monitoring system may be incorrectly programmed, causing a potential failure to warn the driver if tire pressure falls too low.

NHTSA said the brake-light issue "could increase the risk of a crash," while the tire pressure monitor issue could lead to tire failure.

Pontiac dealers will begin contacting owners in early June and will correct both defects free of charge. Owners can contact GM at (800) 620-7668 or NHTSA at (888) 327-4236.

HP Recalls 15,000 Batteries in China

Hot on the heels of recalling 70,000 notebook computer batteries the U.S., Hewlett Packard is recalling 15,000 more in China due to a risk of overheating.

Last week Hewlett-Packard launched a recall for some 70,000 notebook computer batteries distributed in the United States due to a risk of overheating: now, the company is recalling 15,000 notebook computer batteries distributed in China for the same reasons.

The batteries were shipped in HP Pavillion, Compaq Presario, and HP Compaq notebook, and manufactured in late 2007 and early 2008. HP China will replace the batteries for free.

The general details of the Chinese battery recall align well with the battery recall in the United States, but HP has not commented on whether the two recalls are connected.

The incidents are just the latest in a long history of notebook computer battery recalls that date back as long as portable computers have been using batteries. Although untold millions of notebook batteries have been sold and have performed as expected without incident, millions have also been recalled over the industry's history, perhaps most notably more than 10 million batteries manufactured by Sony for a number of computer makers that were recalled in 2005.

Trampoline Recalled Due To Falling Hazard

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Trampoline made by Skywalker Holdings have been recalled due to a falling hazard, the Department of Consumer Protection announced on Tuesday.

The straps supporting the tops of the 13-foot square trampolines' enclosures can break, the DCP said, causing them to drop. They said that could cause the user to fall off of the trampoline.

Although no injuries have been reported, there have been 250 reports of the straps breaking, DCP said, and the potential for injury remains high.

The product was manufactured in China and distributed by Skywalker Holdings LLC, of Brigham City, Utah. The products were sold nationwide in stores and online from January 2007 to February 2009 for $400 to $600. The recalled item has blue spring pads, a black net enclosure and a jumping mat. Skywalker Holdings is printed on a label under the jumping mat and on the enclosure net.

Bunn-O-Matic single-cup brewers recalled

WASHINGTON, May 21 (UPI) -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of Bunn-O-Matic coffee and tea makers due to a burn hazard.

The pod drawer of the Bunn Single Cup Pod Brewers can open unexpectedly while the beverage is brewing, leading to possible burns, the commission said in a statement.

About 35,600 of the single-cup brewers made by Bunn-O-Matic Corp. of Springfield, Ill., were sold nationwide between August 2004 and March 2009 for about $300.

Consumers were advised to stop using the recalled brewers and contact Bunn-O-Matic for two free replacement pod drawers.

Description: This recall involves “Jitterbug” cell phones model numbers SPH-a110 and SPH-a120 with standard key pads and version BB14 software. No other Samsung wireless phones or software versions are included in this recall.

State animal health officials announce recall of Nutro cat food

Department of Agricultural Resources (DAR) Commissioner Scott Soares today reminded Massachusetts consumers of a voluntary recall, announced yesterday by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), of select varieties of Nutro Natural Choice Complete Care dry cat foods and Nutro Max dry cat foods.

Nutro Products is voluntarily recalling some varieties of these cat foods with “best if used by dates” between May 12, 2010 and Aug. 22, 2010, according to the FDA. The cat food is being voluntarily recalled in the United States and 10 other countries due to incorrect levels of zinc and potassium, both of which are essential nutritional supplements added to Nutro cat foods. The recall does not affect any Nutro dog food products, wet cat food or dog and cat treats.

The FDA also recommends that pet owners whose cats are pregnant or experiencing health issues should contact their veterinarians.

Ground Beef Recalled

WASHINGTON—The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced that Bob's Food City, a Hot Springs, Ark., retailer is recalling approximately 375 pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.

The recall involves 1-pound through 5-pound tray packs of "GROUND BEEF CHUCK," "GROUND ROUND" or "REGULAR GROUND BEE." Bearing a sell by date of May 9, 2009. There is no USDA mark of inspection on the tray packs.

The ground beef products were produced on May 7, 2009 and sold to customers of the Bob's Food City retail store located at 800 Malvern Ave., in Hot Springs, Ark.

Vanilla Cuties-brand desserts recalled

WASHINGTON, May 13 (UPI) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the recall of some Vanilla Cuties-brand mini frozen dessert sandwiches due to a labeling error.

The federal agency said Tofutti Brands Inc. (AMEX:TOF) identified 12 pallets of its eight-pack frozen dessert novelties as possibly containing milk, although the product is labeled "Milk Free." The FDA said that presents a health risk for people who have an allergy, severe sensitivity or intolerance to dairy products.

The product -- distributed in the Midwest, New England, California and New York City areas -- carries a manufacturing facility code "360-300" appearing on one of the two end flaps of the box.

Consumers who might have purchased the recalled frozen dessert products can return them for a full refund or can contact the company at 908-272-2400.

Decking recalled after 14 injured

Forty-eight million linear feet of composite decking sold nationwide has been voluntarily recalled following reports that the material can prematurely deteriorate and break, causing injuries, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

The action involves deck boards and railings carrying the brand names LP WeatherBest, ABTCo. and Veranda made by Louisiana-Pacific (LP) Corp., of Nashville. They were sold nationwide from January 2005 through August 2008 at Home Depot and other building supply stores for $1.50 to $2.25 a linear foot.

The CPSC has received 37 reports of decks made with the material, which looks similar to wood, unexpectedly breaking. There have been 14 injuries, including a broken wrist and sprained ankle.

The product was made in the company's Idaho plant and primarily sold in the western United States.

Consumers should contact LP Building Products by calling 888-325-1184 or by going here to determine if they have recalled product. Those who do will receive a free inspection and have any deteriorating decking replaced.

Bassinet recalled because of suffocation danger

A baby bassinet attachment on a playpen sold under the Eddie Bauer label has been recalled in the U.S. and Canada because it can get stuck in a tilted position. This can put a baby in danger of rolling over onto one side while sleeping, with possible dire consequences.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said in an alert today that 10 reports had been received of infants rolling to their sides in the bassinets, which are part of the Eddie Bauer Soothe & Sway Play Yard. In six of these cases, the babies' faces were pressed against the side or the bottom of the bassinets. No injuries or deaths were reported, but in one instance, the baby was turning purple and out of breath when discovered.

The agency alert covers more than 75,000 of the playpens that sold for about $150 in retail outlets such as Sears, Target and the Burlington Coat Factory. But only the bassinet attachments are eligible for consumer redress -- and not in actual cash.

The distributor of the playpens, Dorel Juvenile Group, will give purchasers a $40 voucher that can be used to buy another Dorel product. The number to call if you own the product is (888) 233-4903.

In the meantime, the agency said the bassinet attachment should not be used, but the playpen can continue to be used.

Contaminated face paint recalled by FDA

Hey, football face paint dude: You might want to check the label of the paint you're using.

The Food and Drug Administration today recalled a group of face paint products that were distributed in the U.S. by Fun Express, a division of Oriental Trading, a major online retailer of party supplies.

According to an FDA warning, the water-based paints were shown to contain "significant microbial contamination" that can cause skin irritations.

And what tipped the FDA off to the fact that there might be a problem? The paints had been used at a children's "organized event," says the FDA, that resulted in "rashes, itchiness, burning sensation and swelling where the face paints were applied."

What a fun party. Imagine the thank-you notes.

The recalled face paints have the item numbers 85/2077 through 85/2082. The FDA says that if you have a tube of any of these, don't use it -- throw it away or return to retailer for refund.

Regulation on dietary supplements is not as strict as it is for medications. Manufacturers of dietary supplements do not have to prove to the FDA their products are safe, although regulators are closely monitoring aftermarket reports for any signs of trouble. In 2004, ephedra, an ingredient found in dietary supplements, linked to heart attacks and strokes were also banned.

The health risks from dietary supplements can be life threatening. There are other supplements on the market that due not carry such dangerous risks. They are profitable to produce and often marketed to mislead the consumer. We are likely to see litigation result from the serious injuries caused by these dietary supplements.

WASHINGTON, May 8 (UPI) -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of Wagner Spray Tech paint sprayers due to a risk of electric shock.

The on-off switch on the Wagner Paint Sprayer can dislodge, exposing the operator to electric shock, the CPSC said in a statement.

The recall involves model number 0414248.

About 35,000 of the sprayers were imported from China by Wagner Spray Tech Corp. of Plymouth, Minn. They were sold nationwide at home center and hardware stores from August 2007 through April 2009 for about $99.

Consumers were advised to stop using the sprayers immediately and contact Wagner for a free repair.

Fricon upright freezers recalled

WASHINGTON, May 8 (UPI) -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of Fricon upright freezers due to a fire hazard.

The controller on the freezer is incompatible with the unit, creating a possibility of overheating, which could lead to a fire, the CPSC said in a statement.

About 960 of the freezers were imported from Portugal by Unilever, doing business as Good Humor Breyers United States of Trumbull, Conn.

The company has received four reports of fires, CPSC said.

The freezers are used in grocery stores. They were distributed nationwide from May 2007 through March 2009 for about $105 per year per unit.

Retailers were advised to disconnect the freezers and remove them from service. The company has taken steps to notify retailers and distributors, CPSC said.

Mayfield ice cream is recalled

Mayfield Dairy Farms is recalling some of the 1.5-quart containers of its Homemade Vanilla Select Ice Cream because of possible ammonia contamination.

No other products are being affected by the recall.

The only containers of Homemade Vanilla affected have a date code of 03/17/10 and a plant code of 010176 on the rim of the lid.

"That is the only code that is affected," said Mayfield spokeswoman Bridgett Raper. "If you have a container of Homemade Vanilla with a different code on the rim, then that is safe."

The containers also have a Universal Product Code number of 75243 20148.

More than 14,000 containers have been recalled across several states in Mayfield's Southeastern U.S. distribution area. As for where the containers are specifically located, Mayfield officials are uncertain as of yet.

"We've been researching, trying to find exactly where the containers are," Raper said. "It is scattered right now. We know it has affected Georgia and parts of Tennessee. As for the Athens market area, we don't know yet."

Mayfield asks that anyone who currently has or is purchasing a container of Homemade Vanilla Select Ice Cream check the code before buying or serving the product.

Ammonia ingestion can cause headaches, nausea, vomiting and throat irritation.

Those who have containers of Homemade Vanilla with the recalled codes on them are asked to dispose of the ice cream but keep the container and return it to the store from which it was purchased for a full refund or exchange.

KTM off-road motorcycles recalled

WASHINGTON, May 8 (UPI) -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of KTM North America off-road motorcycles due to front fork failure.

About 550 of the Austrian motorcycles were imported by KTM North America Inc. of Amherst, Ohio. They were sold nationwide through KTM dealers from December 2008 through April 2009 for between $6,000 and $8,000.

No injuries have been reported, but the commission said the front fork inner tube can crack and separate from the fork axle, posing a risk of injury or death to the rider.

The recall includes 125SX, 150SX, 250XC-W and 300XC-W model motorcycles. All of them are colored orange and black.

Consumers were advised to stop using the motorcycles and contact a KTM dealer to schedule a free repair.

25,000 MY2010 Mazda3s Recalled, Hyundai Recalls Over 345,000 Vehicles For Rust

Both Mazda and Hyundai have issued extensive recalls of some of their most popular models, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced today.

2004 Hyundai Elantra Plagued with inadequate clearance between the engine harness and starter housing, 25,400 MY2010 Mazda3s have been recalled for repair. The clearance issue could result in damage to the harness which can subsequently affect engine control and transmission shifting; fuses may blow out as well.

Dealers will reinforce the harness beginning May 6, 2009. For more info, owners can call Mazda at 1-800-222-5500.

Meanwhile, Hyundai is facing a widespread corrosion issue thanks to the road salt used in clearing heavy snow. A total of 170,610 Elantra models from MY2001 through MY2003 and MY2003 Tiburons are prone to breakage of their front lower control arms due to corrosion. It goes without saying, a crash could occur should the suspension piece snap.

Also plaguing the automaker is a recall of 175,765 Sonata, XG300 and XG350 vehicles due to corrosion as well. MY1999-2004 Sonatas and MY2001-2004 XG300 and XG350s are affected by rust and corrosion ailing the front sub-frame. Like the front lower control arm recall, the metal sub-frame can be weakened by corrosion, causing a potentially disasterous failure.

Hyundai will rust-proof existing parts if they are in good shape, or replace corroded parts free of charge . Customers can contact the automaker at 1-800-633-5151 for further details.

Union International Food Co. is further expanding the salmonella spice recall of Lian How and Uncle Chen brand retail and institutional products. The recall now includes various size packages of all Uncle Chen and Lian How sauces, oils, and oil blends because the products may be contaminated with salmonella. The recall also includes previous recalled Uncle Chen and Lian How packages of 15-pound and smaller size packages of the Lian How brand dry spices, 30-pound boxes and smaller size packages of Lian How crushed chili, Uncle Chen brand black pepper (whole and ground) in 5oz. retail containers, Uncle Chen white pepper (whole and ground) in 5oz. retail containers and 5 pound plastic bags and the Uncle Chen brand Wasabi powder in 2.2 pound foil bags.

The recalled products were distributed in the states of California, Oregon and Washington to retailers, wholesalers, distributors, restaurant suppliers and restaurants. Union International Foods Company has ceased the production and distribution of these products as the US FDA, the California Department of Public Health and Union International Foods Co. continue the investigation as to nature and full extent of this potential contamination.

Salmonella was isolated from an open container of Lian How White Pepper, which was found at a restaurant where some outbreak victims ate. After discussions with the California Department of Public Health, Union Foods agreed to initiate a recall.

Over 40 people in four states (CA, WA, OR, NV) have now been linked to this outbreak of Salmonella Rissen - a rare but dangerous strain of salmonella.

Fitness Balls From EB Recalled Due To Hazard Involving Falls

Washington (dbTechno) - EB Brands fitness balls have been voluntarily recalled due to the fact that a defect has been found, which has created a falling hazard.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the voluntary recall this week, involving millions of these fitness balls.

The fitness balls from EB Brands were sold under different name brands, including Valeo, Bally Total Fitness, Everlast, and Body Fit Fitness Balls.

It is believed that the balls in question were sold between May 2000 and February 2009.

There are no particular colors or anything of that nature to the balls that give the defected products a distinct quality.

Instead, it is believed that all of the fitness balls sold carry the defect and pose a health hazard.

The issue takes place in regards to inflating the ball, and the company is working to remedy this by supplying new instructions to help consumers.

There have been nearly 50 reports submitted to EB Brands that the balls would inflate too much, and end up bursting.

The balls would burst as soon as they were put into use, causing the user to fall to the ground.

Amalgamated Produce Sprout Recall Expanded

Last week we wrote about an Alfalfa Sprout recall over possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination involving Amalgamated Produce, Inc.’s (API), Specialty Farms, Vermont Sprout House, Nature’s Promise, and BroccoSprouts products. That recall has since been extended to include two types of Crunchy Sprouts.

The extended recall includes crunchy sprouts labeled either Specialty Farms Organic Crunchy Sprouts or Organic Crunchy Pea Mix with a sell-by date code from 3/31/09 through 4/27/09 and which are packaged in net weight four-ounce plastic containers. The products contain UPC 8192400061, noted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The prior recall notice concerned Specialty Farms, Vermont Sprout House, Nature’s Promise, and BroccoSprouts products with a sell by date code also from 3/31/09 through 4/27/09 and also packaged in net weight four-ounce plastic containers.

All of the recalled sprouts were sold in plastic containers, except for the Nature’s Promise eight-ounce organic alfalfa, which is packaged in a plastic bag. In addition, the recall includes five-pound bulk alfalfa sprouts, plastic bagged sprouts. The bulk sprouts were sold in boxes marked with a sticker identifying “5 pound bulk alfalfa, Julian dates 069 through 097.”

As with the initial recall, the expanded recall has been implemented over concerns the sprouts may have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Amalgamated Produce, Inc. voluntarily recalled sprouts on April 9, 2009 after laboratory analysis found positive results for the Listeria monocytogenes pathogen.

The FDA noted that all products produced by Amalgamated Produce, Inc. under the brand names Specialty Farms, Vermont Sprout House, and BroccoSprouts with a sell-by date 5/1/09 and beyond are not included in this recall.

The FDA also said that the recalled Amalgamated Produce products have been distributed in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.

The FDA is advising consumers in possession of the recalled products to return them to the point of purchase for refund. API can be reached toll-free at 1-800-358-3808 between 9:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. EST with any questions.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal Listeriosis infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, Listeriosis can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women, as well as the birth of a baby suffering from the infection. Pregnant women are about 20 times likelier than others to be infected, with about one-third of Listeriosis cases occurring during pregnancy.

Listeria monocytogenes is responsible for an estimated 2,500 illnesses in the United States annually, with about 200 in every 1,000 cases resulting in death. Listeriosis can take days, even weeks, to develop and can present in anything from a mild flu-like illness to meningitis and septicemia.

Acting Reno Fire Marshal warns of recalled GE ranges

Certain GE ranges are being recalled after at least 47 reports of overheating wiring, including 33 reports of wiring that caught fire resulting in one fire that caused structural damage to a home, and 14 other reports of minor property damage, Acting Reno Fire Marshal Joan Presley said today. Presley said that fortunately, there have not yet been any reports of injuries.

The voluntary recall by GE Consumer & Industrial of Louisville, Kentucky is being conducted in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Presley said the recall involves about 28,000 GE Profile Freestanding Dual Fuel Ranges manufactured in Mexico and sold nationwide at department and appliance stores from June 2002 through December 2005 for between $1,300.00 and $2,000.00 each.

Presley said area residents with the recalled stoves should immediately stop using the oven and contact GE for a free repair by calling (888) 352-9764 or visiting the company's website at www.geappliances.com. According to Presley, GE officials have said that those with the recalled units can continue to use the cooktop burners.

Wilcoxson's ice cream cones recalled

Wilcoxson's Ice Cream Company of Livingston and Billings is recalling ice cream cones because of a risk of salmonella contamination.

The Nutty Royale Cones were manufactured with peanuts recalled by Peanut Corporation of America and were distributed between May 2007 and July 2008.

Contaminated peanuts were found at a PCA plant in Texas. Peanut Corporation's Texas plant had not been linked to Salmonella until last week.

The Nutty Royale Cones were distributed in Montana and northern Wyoming through retail outlets prior to July 2008 in 6-packs and individually.

Customers who still have Nutty Royales processed before then are asked to throw them away or return them to the store of purchase for a refund.

Officials say Nutty Royale Cones that are now on store shelves are safe, and Wilcoxson's now has a new peanut distributor.

The recalled items include Nutty Royale Cones-six pack with UPC 4815400403 and Nutty Royale Cones-individual with UPC 4815400413.

Acer Predator desktops recalled for overheating problem

Two owners of Acer Predator gaming PCs reported recently that the desktops got so hot the external casing melted. Accordingly, Acer issued a voluntary recall Thursday.

The recall affects approximately 215 Predator desktops sold by Acer between May and December 2008, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

There have been at least two reported incidents of the PCs short-circuiting, causing both internal components and the exterior casing to melt. Fortunately, there were no injuries as a result, according to Acer.

Acer says the problem is caused by the insulation on the PCs' internal wiring, which can "become bent or stripped," leading the wires to overheat.

Noven and Shire recall 39 lots of ADHD patches

Shire PLC announced a new recall of the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder patch Daytrana, saying 39 production lots would be pulled from the market because patients could have trouble taking off the protective liner from the patch.

Shire (nasdaq: SHPGY) voluntarily recalled thousands of Daytrana patches, made by its partner Noven Pharmaceuticals Inc. (nasdaq: NOVN), in 2008 for the same reason. The companies said the patches are still safe to use, but Shire said the patches no longer meet release liner removal specifications.

The companies said there are enough Daytrana patches on the market to meet demand from patients.

Noven is working on solutions for the liner issue. The Miami-based company said it expected the recall, and its costs will be paid for with a $3.8 million reserve established in case of further recalls. It backed its 2009 profit forecast.

On Monday, Shire withdrew a marketing application for Daytrana in Europe. The Basingstoke, U.K., company decided to focus instead on Equasym, a similar drug it bought from UCB Pharma last month. European regulators had asked Shire to conduct another clinical study of Daytrana before they would approve it.

Both drugs have the same active ingredient: methylphenidate, which is also found in Ritalin, Concerta, and Shire's older drug Adderall.

Noven shares fell 5 cents to $9.65 Friday morning. Shire's U.S-traded shares fell 23 cents to $35.38.

Burn hazard prompts rechargeable battery recall

WASHINGTON - Frontrow is recalling its rechargeable batteries that were sold with PA system microphones.

The batteries can rapidly overheat, posing a burn hazard to the user. About 41,000 batteries are included in the recall.

The recalled 2400-mAH NIMH batteries are used in the 930TM, 930HT and 940TM public announcement system microphones. Only batteries with part number 374-30-400-00, printed on the light green sleeve of the battery, are included in the recall.

They were sold at Frontrow distributors nationwide from June 2005 through December 2008. The battery sold for about $7 by itself and about $300 when sold with the transmitter.

LG 830 "Spyder" phones recalled for dropping 911 calls

US consumer safety regulators have issued a recall on some 30,000 LG mobile phones after a software error caused a stranded motorist's phone to drop its connection to 911 emergency services.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says the recall involves LG 830 "Spyder" touch-screen cell phones sold in the US from September through November 2008. Affected handsets use software versions T83LGV03 and T83LGV04.

The recall is based on a single report of a motorist in a disabled car who's 911 call was dropped because the network had difficulty establishing a GPS lock on the phone.

CPSC warns the phones require a software upgrade or the phone may have trouble with poor or dropped connections on emergency 911 calls — generally conversations you want to come through crystal clear.

Spyder owners can spot their handset's model number underneath the battery. The software version is verified on the "phone information" menu in the handset's settings. LG says it's contacting customers with affected phones to schedule a free software upgrade.

The phones were sold at cellular dealers in Alabama, Alaska, Idaho, Kentucky, Mississippi, Puerto Rico, Tennessee, Washington State, and Wisconsin.

Kids' Flip Flops Recalled Over Lead Worry

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said it has issued a recall on a brand of childrens' flip flops because the decorative paint on some models can contain levels of lead in excess of the federal standard.

The Havaianas brand flip flops were sold under the names Baby Estampas, Baby Pets, Kids Apple, Kids Fairy, Kids Flores, Kids Lighthouse, Kids Monsters, Kids Surf, Baby Letrinhas, Kids Sports, Kids Candies, Kids Fun, Kids Love, Kids Sereias, Kids Speed, Kids Lucky Bug, Kids Pets, Kids Rock, Kids Slim, Kids Wonder Woman, Kids Small Flowers and Kids Tropical w/Kit.

Havaianas flip flops without decorative paint are not being recalled.

The flip flops have been sold in department and specialty stores nationwide from November 2006 through February 2009 for about $15 to $24 a pair. They are manufactured in Brazil.

CPSC said consumers should stop using the flip flops immediately.

Nearly 80,000 Nautilus Bowflex devices recalled

Nautilus Inc. is recalling 78,000 of its Bowflex Ultimate 2 Home Gyms because of the dangers that seat rails will unlatch. At least 18 people have been injured so far, with some customers suffering cuts to their heads and shoulders; some of the cuts required stitches.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said the gym’s horizontal seat rail, if not manually latched for storage, can fall on a user or bystander, causing the injuries. The government agency said Vancouver, Wash.-based Nautilus (NYSE: NLS) has received 18 reports of injuries so far.

The Chinese-made gyms were sold from June 2005 through January for about $2,300. This is the second Bowflex recall in the past two-and-half years.

OTTAWA, ONTARIO - Health Canada is advising consumers of a recall of Desferrioxamine Mesilate for Injection (500 mg and 2g format) by Hospira Healthcare Corporation. Certain lots of this product are being recalled because of the potential for very small particles to form after preparation for intravenous administration.

Health Canada is working with the company on the recall of the affected Canadian products from the market. The following specific lots are being recalled:

Lot number: U102237AA in 2g format

The lot number is found on the label of the carton and on the vial of the 2 formats of Desferrioxamine Mesilate.

Please note that Hospira Healthcare Corporation has acquired this product from Mayne Pharma (Canada) Inc, and therefore the product will bear the name Mayne Pharma Canada Inc. on the label and carton.

The problem with these lots is related to the drug substance which may produce some cloudiness after preparation. The cloudiness is a result of very small particles that form when preparing the solution. These products are administered by intravenous injection and therefore these particles may induce blockage of small blood vessels. It is recommended that if the prepared solution becomes cloudy, it should not be administered.

Desferrioxamine Mesilate is prescribed for the treatment of acute/chronic iron intoxication and chronic aluminum overload in dialysis patients with end-stage renal failure.

There may be cases in which this product is present in a patient's home. These patients are advised to check for the DIN and lot number on the product packaging or consult with their pharmacist to determine whether or not they have drug product from the affected lots. 2009 Honda Odyssey Recalled Over Brake Hose Problem

WASHINGTON — Honda is recalling 421 U.S.-built Honda Odyssey minivans because of a problem with the front brake hoses that could lead to reduced brake system performance.

"Drivers would not be aware of brake system failure and braking capability would not be possible, increasing the risk of a crash," said the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in its recall summary of the problem.

Honda explained that incorrect front brake hoses were installed. The brake hose can contact the caliper bolt and over time, a hole may develop that would allow brake fluid to leak.

Honda dealers will inspect the front brake hoses and replace them with the correct brake hoses for free. The recall began on February 12. Odyssey owners can contact Honda at (800) 999-1009.

Positive Listeria test sees Maple Leaf recall more than 26,000 packages of wieners

TORONTO — More than 26,000 packages of wieners have been voluntarily recalled by Maple Leaf after thousands were mistakenly shipped throughout Eastern Canada despite some of the hot dogs testing positive for Listeria, Maple Leaf said Tuesday.

While the company said the risk to the public is extremely low, it added it was "clearly not acceptable" that some of the 450-gram packages of Shopsy's Deli Fresh All Beef Frankfurters and Maple Leaf Hot Dogs made it to market in Ontario, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador.

"In this particular case we had human error," said Michael McCain, president and CEO of Maple Leaf Foods.

"Product was released out of quarantine. It shouldn't have been.

"We've taken corrective action against both the individuals responsible and the situation."

The recall is another public relations blow to Maple Leaf, which has been dealing with the aftermath of one of the largest food-borne illnesses in Canadian history.

The company has agreed to pay up to $125,000 to individuals with serious and long-lasting physical injuries resulting from a listeriosis outbreak linked to one of its Toronto plants last summer.

The outbreak killed at least 20 people and triggered the largest meat recall in Canadian history.

Concerns about the hot dogs were raised when some of the products produced at a Hamilton plant tested positive for Listeria.

The company tests for all six types of Listeria even though only one - Listeria monocytogenes - is dangerous to human health. It was not clear what type of Listeria was responsible for the latest recall.

Instead of being held in quarantine pending further test results, the hot dogs were accidentally cleared for release, said spokeswoman Linda Smith. About 40 per cent of the shipment was then sent to stores.

It took about one week for the recall to be declared and it's expected all the remaining products will be back in the company's control by Wednesday, Smith said.

"Clearly this is unacceptable to us, given that we have extraordinarily stringent protocols and a culture of food safety," she said.

Since Listeria is so pervasive, positive test results are actually a good sign that Maple Leaf's safety scanning is working, McCain said in an interview.

"It's a bit of a leap of faith but I'm very hopeful that people will see this is actually a good news story, that these protocols and our commitment to those protocols result in action that years ago would never even have been detected, let alone acted upon."

No illnesses have been reported by anyone who consumed the hot dogs and the company said it's confident that the risk to human health is low.

Eating a contaminated hot dog would only be potentially dangerous if it was consumed uncooked, since cooking a wiener would kill the Listeria, Smith said.

Shopsy's Deli Fresh All Beef Frankfurters carrying the product code 20730 and UPC 6487520730, with a best before date of April 22 and 23, are affected by the recall.

The recalled Maple Leaf Hot Dogs Original products have product code 22356 with UPC 6310022356 and a best before date of April 23.

Consumers who purchased the products should call 1-800-568-5801 for more information about a refund or replacement.

The gun maker said it was recalling all Walther PPK and PPK/S pistols that it manufactured from March 21, 2002, until Feb. 3, 2009.

Smith & Wesson posted a recall notice Friday on its Web site and offered additional details in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing Tuesday.

The filing cited a problem in the affected pistol models that "may permit a round to be discharged without the trigger being pulled."

The Springfield-based company said it was issuing the recall "because any unintended discharge of a firearm has the potential for causing injury."

The online notice and regulatory filing did not say whether any injuries had resulted, and it did not specify how many guns were being recalled. There was no answer after business hours Tuesday at the company's headquarters, and a call to a customer-service representative was referred to headquarters.

The filing said, "While we have no reason to believe that the condition affects every pistol produced during the designated period, we have chosen in the interest of safety to replace the hammer block in every pistol that is returned in order to make certain that each firearm is functioning in a safe, reliable, and proper fashion," the filing said.

The notice on the company's Web site says, "When the manual safety is disengaged, Smith & Wesson's Product Engineering Group has determined that the possibility exists in certain firearms that lowering the hammer may cause a chambered round to fire."

Customers with the affected pistols can send them back to the company, and have them returned with a new part, at no cost, the company said.

Smith & Wesson said it had established a financial reserve to cover recall costs it will book in its fiscal third quarter that ended Jan. 31. The company estimates the costs will trim $900,000 to $1.3 million from its quarterly profit.

Wells' Dairy expands recall of ice cream products

LE MARS, Iowa (AP) -- Wells' Dairy is expanding its voluntary recall of ice cream products because of a possible risk of salmonella.

The Le Mars company says the products may contain peanuts from a Georgia-based company linked to a salmonella outbreak blamed for at least eight deaths nationwide.

Wells' Dairy recalled some Blue Bunny ice cream products at the end of January. The latest recall includes select Blue Bunny, Great Value, Hy-Vee, Sysco, Fastco, Shurfresh and Country Rich products. The products have a "best used by" dates before Feb. 4, 2010.

Consumers who bought the recalled products should return them to the store for a refund.

Giant Food LLC and Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. have pulled several potato products from their shelves that were subject to a voluntary recall because of possible bacterial contamination.

Giant Food and Stop & Shop said late Saturday they have pulled 20 oz. bags of Simply Potatoes Shredded Hash Browns, Simply Potatoes Homestyle Slices and Simply Potatoes Red Potato Wedges.

The products were recalled by Northern Star Co., a subsidiary of food processor Michael Foods Inc. The recalled items all have "use by" dates on their packages ranging from March 29 to April 3, 2009.

The products may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause flu-like symptoms, such as high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. The bacteria can be very damaging for pregnant women or those with weakened immune systems.

Both Landover, Md.-based Giant Food and Quincy, Mass.-based Stop & Shop said they have not received reports of any illness or injuries related to consumption of the products.

The companies said customers who have purchased these products should discard any unused portions and bring the receipts to their stores for a full refund.

Giant Food operates 182 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia.

British retailers order Colgate recall

LONDON, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- Two British retail groups announced the recall of thousands of counterfeit Colgate toothpaste products.

The Boots Group and Sainsbury's said while the fake Colgate products do not represent a public health risk, thousands of tubes will be recalled for not being a "genuine Colgate product," The Daily Telegraph said Wednesday.

"We believe there are no health risks associated with using the counterfeit toothpaste but, as it is not a genuine Colgate product, we removed the affected tubes from our stores immediately," a Sainsbury's spokesman said.

"We take the health and well-being of our customers extremely seriously," a Boots spokeswoman said. "As soon as we were made aware of a possible issue with this product, it was immediately withdrawn from sale."

The Daily Mail said both retail chains posted signs regarding the counterfeit Colgate Cavity Protection items and Sainsbury's was investigating how the products made it to store shelves.

Lead Poisoning Leads To Crib Recall

A crib has been recalled after a child was diagnosed with lead poisoning.

The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection said the Newport 4-In-1 Cribs and matching furniture have been recalled because of excessive levels of lead in the paint.

The products were sold nationwide at various specialty furniture stores from April 2006 to November 2008. The cribs sold for about $600, and the matching furniture pieces were sold from $700 to $1,000. The pieces were manufactured in Indonesia for Munire Furniture Inc. of New Jersey.

The cribs and furniture are made of wood and have a rubbed black finish. The red paint underneath the black finish contains high levels of lead on some pieces.

The DCP said that Munire has received a report of a child diagnosed with lead poisoning after ingesting the paint.

The label, containing the model number, date and country of manufacture can be found on the side panel of the crib. The date of manufacture is on the back panel of the furniture.

Ski bindings recalled due to risk of injury

Check your ski bindings: an estimated 125,000 Atomic Skis bindings sold in the U.S. between 1998 and 2005 are subject to a recall due to unexpected release and a fall hazard.

According to the recall, the company has received four reports of injuries due to cracked bindings and unexpected foot release, which can cause a skier to lose control or fall and suffer injuries.

The four reported injuries include a concussion and shoulder and knee injuries due to falls.

Stryker says it recalled facial implant kits

Medical device maker Stryker Corp. said Wednesday it recalled 322 custom-made cranial implant kits because of possible sterility issues, which the Food and Drug Administration advised could be lethal.

Stryker recalled all kits distributed between Nov. 5, 2007, and Oct. 23, 2008 because it can't be sure the kits were properly sterilized. Physicians received a recall letter Oct. 24, and on Thursday the FDA deemed the recall a Class 1, meaning there is a reasonable probability that use of the product will cause serious injury or death.

Physicians who used the implant kits were advised to follow up with patients for at least six months after surgery to check for infections. The letter also told patients how to identify and return any remaining implant kits.

The cranial implant kits are used to correct defects in the jaw and face, or cranium and face.

Stryker shares gained 16 cents to $40.05 in abbreviated trading Wednesday.

Starcaps-brand dietary supplement recalled

WASHINGTON, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the expansion of the recall of Starcaps-brand dietary supplement to include additional lot numbers.

The FDA said the voluntary recall was initiated by Balanced Health Products Inc. of New York because lot Nos. 82866 and 83801 were found to contain an undeclared ingredient, Bumetanide -- a diuretic available by prescription only, posing the risk of fluid and electrolyte loss and an elevation in uric acid concentrations.

The original recall, announced in November, involved only lot No. 84810. Starcaps are sold in 30 capsule plastic bottles by retail stores nationwide and on the Internet to help "metabolize protein, eliminate bloat, and detoxify your system" as well as helping in weight reduction.

The company said the contamination apparently occurred in Lima, where the raw materials for the product originated.

Kroger Asks Owners to Check for Recalled Dog Food

Supermarket chain’s pet food recall reminder targets North Texas and Louisiana.

Supermarket chain Kroger on Friday asked its customers in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, east Texas, and Shreveport and Alexandria, La., to check pet food they have for specific packages of Pet Pride cat and dog food.

The products were initially included in a Mars Petcare U.S. recall on September 12, 2008. The concern is the pet food may be contaminated with Salmonella Schwarzengrund and may cause illness in cats, dogs, and humans that come in contact with the food.

Kroger asked customers to return recalled products to their store for a full refund or replacement.

The specific products are Pet Pride Indoor Cat Food, 3.5-lb. and 18-lb. packages, and Pet Pride Weight Management Dog Food, 17.6-lb. package, with a “best by” date of “JUL 29 09” or earlier and the number “17” followed by five other numbers below the “best by” date. The 17 designates the plant that produced the food.

The FDA announced Friday that Nestle is recalling Nesquik Strawberry Powder because 21.8-ounce containers may contain small fragments of aluminum.

A recall of chocolate coins in Canada has stirred some alarm locally, as the candy-intense Halloween season arrives.

Sherwood Company voluntarily recalled the candy, packaged in gold foil to resemble coins, in Canada after the Food and Drug Administration warned of possible melamine contamination stemming from China. The company is checking its candies to determine if contaminated milk products were used.

The candy has been sold across Canada through Costco stores, but it was not immediately clear whether any of it reached U.S. stores.

According to news reports, the recall affects only the Sherwood Brands Pirate's Gold Milk Chocolate Coins and not other candy coins that resemble the Sherwood product.

Babies' eczema cream recalled

A PHARMACEUTICAL factory in Guizhou Province has ordered a nationwide recall of an eczema cream for babies after a powerful hormone was found in the skin cream.

At least one baby, in Hunan Province, had an adverse reaction to the cream after using it for seven months to treat eczema, Chinanews.com reported.

Wang Ying, legal representative of Miaoling Miao Nationality Medicine Technology Co, said a company official surnamed Su asked others to put clobetasol propionate into Miaoling eczema cream to seek revenge after the company changed his stock options package, the report said.

Clobetasol propionate is a corticosteroid used to treat skin ailments including eczema. It is highly potent and is not recommended for use beyond two weeks. The pharmaceutical factory claims its products are made of herbs.

The Chinanews report did not say how much clobetasol propionate had been added to the cream but the latest report by a Zhejiang Province newspaper said an eight-month-old girl in Changsha, Hunan Province, experienced bleeding similar to a menstrual period after using the Miaoling cream.

Wang said the case had been reported to police but they haven't provided any updates. He added the tainted cream was mainly sold in Changsha and Zhengzhou, Henan Province.

No adverse reactions have been found in Shanghai but the city's health authority said its investigation was still under way.

It will order a sales suspension if the problem is confirmed, Youth Daily reported yesterday.

Chinese Herbal Remedy Recalled After Infant Dies

Chinese health authorities ordered hospitals to stop using an herbal drug after it was suspected of causing the death of a newborn and triggering "adverse effects" in three others, a state news agency reported Monday.

It was the second time this month herbal drugs have been blamed in the deaths of Chinese patients, and the case comes as China is trying to reassure consumers over a widespread tainted milk scandal that further marred its already troubled product safety record.

China's pharmaceutical industry is highly lucrative but poorly regulated. In recent years, a string of fatalities blamed on counterfeit or shoddily made medications have been reported.

The latest death, of a 9-day-old baby, came after the infant received an injection of Yinzhihuang, a drug used to treat liver diseases and jaundice, the Xinhua News Agency said. The drug contains extracts of herbs including gardenia and honeysuckle.

Three other newborns developed unspecified "adverse effects" after receiving injections, Xinhua reported, citing the Ministry of Health.

The Ministry of Health ordered hospitals across China to stop using Yinzhihuang. The producer, Shanxi province-based Taihang Pharmaceutical, said on its Web site Monday it recalled a batch on Oct. 16, the day it learned of the baby's death.

Earlier this month, authorities said a ginseng-based drug used to treat thrombosis and heart disease was contaminated with bacteria and led to the deaths of three people in southwest China.

Wireless guitar for Wii is recalled by manufacturer

Owners of the Rage Wireless Guitar, a peripheral controller for the Nintendo Wii game system and sold by Performance Designed Products Inc., should stop using the devices due to a risk of chemical burns from them.

PDP and the Consumer Product Safety Commission jointly issued a recall notice Wednesday covering all Rage Wireless Guitars sold between June and September — about 57,000 of them. A circuit-board defect can cause the controller’s double-AA batteries to leak if the batteries are not installed properly.

At least one gamer has been injured as a result, PDP says.

The Rage Wireless Guitar was designed for the Wii version of “Guitar Hero.” It’s about 30 inches long, costs between $40 and $60, comes in blue or white and has small lights in the fret buttons along the guitar’s neck. The guitars were manufactured in China.

Owners are asked to return the controller/guitars to the place they were purchased for a full refund. Nintendo is not involved in the recall and should not be contacted.

Recalled cots ‘not sold here ’

LOCAL distributors for Delta Enterprises — the US company that recalled 1.6million baby cots manufactured in China — say the defective cribs are not available locally.

Delta Enterprises in New York recalled the cots, made in China, Indonesia and Taiwan, after it was reported that there was an “entrapment and suffocation” risk associated with them.

The alarm was raised by the China National Furniture Association, which said that the designs or standards of the cots would expose a baby to risk.

China was recently embroiled in a tainted milk scandal that led to the recalling of a number of brands of chocolates made with the melamine- contaminated milk.

A statement by Delta Enterprises sent to a local toy retailer said the recalls were in respect of drop-side cots.

“In some styles, the drop- side can detach when the spring peg is not engaged. In others, failure to use or install safety pegs can create a gap to cause an entrapment and suffocation risk to infants and toddlers,” the company said.

Local distributor for Delta, Saul Weiner, said: “The cots they are referring to are not available here. We are expecting toddler beds to be shipped to us by them in the next few weeks.”

Vee Kistensamy, toy buyer for Toys R Us, Reggies, Baby and Company and Little People, confirmed this: “We will be receiving the beds that have the cars and princess designs on them. The mattresses will be manufactured locally.”

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (AP) - A company is recalling Koala’s March creme-filled cookies from U.S. shelves because they were made in China and may be contaminated with melamine.

Lotte USA Inc. says Friday that it initiated the recall on Sept. 29. The Michigan-based company says it’s not aware of any illnesses associated with the products. The recall covers king-size chocolate, white chocolate and strawberry flavors. It also includes family pack-size chocolate, white chocolate, strawberry, chestnut, Hawaii chocolate and Hawaii pineapple flavors.

Cookies were distributed nationwide and to Canada.

Melamine is the industrial chemical blamed for killing four infants and sickening 54,000 children in China. It’s used to make plastics and fertilizers.

Kroger Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips recalled

ATLANTA - Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin alerts consumers to the recall of some Kroger chocolate chips that may have a milk ingredient not listed on the label.

Kroger Value Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips, sold at Kroger stores in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia, are being recalled because they may contain a milk protein not listed as an ingredient on its label.

People who have an allergy to milk run the risk of having an allergic reaction if they consume the product.

The chips, produced by Barry Callebaut, USA LLC, are sold in 12-ounce packages as "Kroger Value Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips.” It has the UPC Code 11110–86603 and “sell by” date May 30, 2010. The “sell by” date is found in black ink on the back end of the bag.

Portable generators recalled

(AP) -- About 13,000 portable generators, manufactured in China and imported by General Power Products LLC, have been recalled because the fuel valve can get damaged when the units are shipped, causing fuel to leak or spill out while they are in use.

The company has received 14 reports of damaged fuel valves, but no reports of injuries.

The generators were sold primarily at hardware and home improvement stores in Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Ohio and Texas between June 2008 and September 2008.

Product Safety Inspectors from the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection are conducting recall effectiveness checks at retail establishments in response to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s voluntary recall of Battery Operated Toy “Speed Boats” manufactured in China and imported by Dollar General Merchandising Inc., of Goodlettsville, Tennessee, due to burn hazard.

This product was produced in plastic and was manufactured in a variety of colors and designs. The recalled toy boat measures approximately 12 inches long and 8 inches wide and its motor uses two (2) AA batteries. Burn hazard occurs if the two battery terminals come into contact, causing the battery to overheat and creating the potential for injury. Dextroamphetamine Sulfate Tablets Recalled

ROCKVILLE, Md., Oct. 16 -- The FDA announced the recall of dextroamphetamine sulfate 5-mg tablets because they may contain as much as twice the labeled amount of active ingredient.

The voluntary recall applies to three lots of the product -- 77946, 81141, and 81142 -- shipped between January 2007 and May 2008 by ETHEX Corporation, of St. Louis, Mo.

The manufacturer found a small number of oversized tablets in lots that hadn't yet been distributed, according to a company release.

There have been no reported adverse events associated with the product, according to the FDA, and ETHEX said it had not received any report of oversized tablets from any of its wholesalers, retailers, or consumers.

Multiple companies sell versions of the generic dextroamphetamine sulfate. The tablets in question are round and orange and have "ETHEX" and "311" etched on one side.

Dextroamphetamine sulfate is a psychostimulant used primarily to treat Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy.

A dextroamphetamine sulfate overdose may put patients at an increased risk of tachycardia, hypertension, tremors, decreased appetite, headache, insomnia, dizziness, blurred vision, or nausea, the FDA said.

This is the company's second recall this year because of manufacturing defects that resulted in double-strength tablets.

In June, ETHEX recalled morphine sulfate 60-mg extended release tablets because they were double the appropriate thickness and could contain a double dose of morphine, according to the FDA.

More China milk products recalled in Australia

Food Standards Australia has pulled another two products off the shelves over concerns about contaminated milk from China.

Consumers who have bought Dali Yuan First Brand Milk Vanilla Flavour, or Orion Brand Tiramisu Italian Cake with Cheese Cream are being advised to throw the products out.

Earlier this month, several other products were taken off the shelves over concerns about milk contaminated with a chemical used in plastics manufacturing.

Food Standards spokesperson, Lydia Buchtman, says consumers should not be too worried if they have eaten the products.

"Certainly the advice is if you have any of those products, do dispose of them safely out of the reach of children or pets," she said.

"But don't be too concerned if you have eaten them of course, because it's something you'd have to eat over a long time in quite high amounts to have any ill effect on you."

More Than 200,000 Nissan Vehicles Recalled

Nissan announced today it's recalling more than 200,000 vehicles in the United States and overseas to fix a sensor system that could affect the vehicle's passenger-side airbag. The recall is expected to begin in early November.

The problem stems from an electronic component in the control unit for the passenger-side airbag, which may have been made out of specification. The control units affected are the Continental Automotive Systems' Occupant Classification Systems. Nissan has stated the electronic component could interrupt a signal in the sensor system and prevent the airbag from deploying under certain conditions.

The recall will affect the 2007-2008 models of the Nissan Murano, Nissan Rogue, and Infiniti EX35 crossover SUVs. More than 140,000 Nissan Altimas also will be recalled, along with the 350Z, and the Infiniti G35 Sedan, and G37. Affected model years are also 2007-2008 for these vehicles. There have been no reported injuries or crashes related to the airbag sensor, and most of the recalled vehicles are located in the United States. Other markets affected are Mexico, Canada, Puerto Rico, and the Persian Gulf.

Meal products recalled after metal fragments found

AUSTRALIAN consumers could get a nasty surprise when they sit down to eat dinner tonight, following an announcement by McCain Foods that it has recalled a batch of its frozen meal products because they could contain metal fragments.

The products affected are bags of Stir Fry Vegetables Pasta Alfredo with Sauce, with a best before date of December 21, 2009.

McCain has stated the meals should not be eaten and can be returned to stores for a refund.

Smoked meat recalled in Que., Maritimes, Ottawa over listeria fears

OTTAWA - A variety of popular prepackaged smoked meat has been recalled over concerns the product might be contaminated with listeria, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency reported Tuesday.

One-kilogram pouches of Dunn's Famous Smoked Meat sold at Costcos throughout Atlantic Canada, Quebec, and Ottawa have been voluntarily recalled by the distributor, Les Salaisons Desco Inc. of Boisbriand, Que.

The pouches contain six 175-packets of smoked meat and bear the UPC 4 00007 55699 7.

The CFIA said that no illnesses have yet been linked to the consumption of the smoked meat.

A listeria outbreak at a Maple Leaf Foods plant in Toronto this summer claimed 20 lives across Canada. A further 33 cases of listeriosis have been linked to the tainted meat slicers used in the Toronto facility.

"For most people, the risk posed by listeria is very low. Healthy people who are exposed to listeria are rarely affected by the bacteria," the CFIA said.

"However, there are certain people who are at higher risk for listeriosis - infants, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems."

Girls' sandals recalled

Washington, D.C. -- Rack Room Shoes Inc. has recalled about 11,500 girls' sandals due to a choking hazard, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said today.

Ornamental flowers on the sandals can come off, posing a choking hazard for young children, the CPSC said.

The recalled girls' sandals, made in China, are leather with attached leather flowers and were sold under the Kids Feet name. The sandals are white or white with pink soles. The sandals were sold in girls' sizes 5 through 12.

Yo-Yo amusement park rides recalled

WASHINGTON (AP) — An amusement park ride manufacturer Wednesday recalled about 85 Yo-Yo rides to repair defects involved in two accidents.

The Yo-Yo ride made by Chance Rides Manufacturing Inc., based in Wichita, Kan., has a series of metal arms extending from a rotating hub. A chair is attached to the end of each arm by a chain, and the arms and chairs swing outward as the hub rotates and picks up speed.

In May, a Yo-Yo ride collapsed at the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee in Angels Camp, Calif., injuring 23 people. In March 2006, a Yo-Yo ride at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington, Texas, also malfunctioned. Nine people were injured, sustaining bruises and back and neck strains, according to reports from the Texas Department of Insurance.

Chance Rides Manufacturing will give ride owners and state regulators kits to help inspect and repair defective rides, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Wednesday. The company will also offer new maintenance guidelines for the rides.

Jeff Roth, vice president of administration for Chance Rides Manufacturing, said the kits will help owners and operators identify problems.

"We are pleased to bring that to market to allow the owners of Yo-Yo rides to keep them safe for the future," he said.

Vitodens 200 boilers recalled

WASHINGTON, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of Vitodens 200 boilers due to a fire hazard.

The gas-fired boilers can leak gas, posing a risk of fire, the commission said Thursday.

About 4,600 of the boilers made by Viessmann Manufacturing Co. Inc. of Canada were sold though plumbing and heating contractors from January 2002 through December 2007 for between $4,000 and $7,500 each.

The recall involves model Nos. WB2 6-24C, WB2 6-24, WB2 8-32, WB2 11-44 and WB2 15-60.

The boilers are white and have "Viessmann" and "Vitodens 200" printed on the exterior in silver letters.

Consumers were advised to stop using the boilers immediately and contact a certified heating contractor or Viessmann for a free replacement of the boiler's O-ring.

Another milk product recalled in Aust

A fourth product in Australia has been recalled because of the milk scandal in China.

Kirin Milk Tea has been withdrawn after test results showed it contained the industrial chemical melamine.

A number of children have died and more than 50,000 infants have fallen ill in China after drinking powdered milk containing the chemical.

Lydia Buchtmann from Food Standards Australia New Zealand says the product is sold at Asian food shops and comes in a can.

"The advice is don't consume it and dispose of it safely, but of course not to be too concerned because you'd have to consume this quite often virtually everyday for weeks or even months to have any ill effect," she said.

Jack Lift Tools and Kits recalled

WASHINGTON, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of Jack Lift Tools and Kits due to due to a collapse hazard.

The lawn mower jacks, made by Shivvers Manufacturing Inc., of Corydon, Iowa, have failed repeatedly due to threads stripping or nuts breaking, the Commission said in a statement Friday.

About 450 of the jacks were sold at Country Clipper dealers nationwide between May 2007 and June 2008 for $150. The full jack kit sold for $225, the commission said.

The jacks are sold separately and with Charger, JAZee and Boss riding lawn mowers.

Consumers were advised to stop using the jacks and contact a local service dealer to have their lawn mowers repaired at no charge.

White Rabbit Candy Recalled

ATLANTA -- The makers of White Rabbit Candy, QFCO, Inc. of Burlingame, Calif., is recalling packages of White Rabbit Creamy Candy in eight and 16 ounce packages.

All other flavors of White Rabbit Candy, including assorted, Red Bean, Coffee, Corn, Lychee, Mango and Strawberry, are sold in seven ounce packages. All packaging has a white rabbit logo on the front of the package with the words White Rabbit. The packages were sold in Georgia, California, Hawaii, Illinois, Minnesota, New York, Oregon, Texas and Washington through wholesale distributors and retail stores.

The recall came after it was discovered the product was contaminated with melamine.

Food Standards Australia backs Cadbury recall

Australia's food regulator says the withdrawal of a chocolate product by Cadbury, is a sign the food regulation system is working well.

At Cadbury's head office in Birmingham company officials said the deadly chemical melamine was found in tests carried out on several of its products made at its Beijing plant.

Those products exported to Australia, Hong Kong and Taiwan have now been recalled.

The recalled products include Cadbury Eclairs and bulk packets of Dairy Milk chocolate.

In Australia only eclairs have been recalled from the shelves.

Daniel Ellis from Cadbury says the eclairs are the only product the company imports from its Chinese factory to Australia.

"There've been some initial tests and we've reason to believe that there is concern in relation to that product from this testing," he said.

"However, the detailed testing is still coming through so we don't have any more detail other than that, we just know that this product has come out of the Chinese factory, we have some concerns about the integrity of the product."

It is the latest fallout from the toxic milk scandal that made 53,000 Chinese babies ill and claimed four infant's lives.

A spokeswoman for Food Standards Australia New Zealand, Lydia Buchtmann, says it is working with state and Territory regulators to check all products containing dairy from China and last week recalled a brand of imported lollies.

She says Cadbury has acted cautiously as the products contained only a very small amount of the chemical.

"It's quite a low health risk, you'd have to eat an awful lot of lollies consistently, probably over several weeks to have an effect of ill health," she said.

"The melamine affected babies, of course because they're very small and the only thing they could consume was infant formula, but with something like a lolly, a healthy child it would have to be constantly eating over quite a period of time."

The Raon Digital Everun Note claims to be the first dual-core Netbook. Though at a price as high as the HP Mini-Note--coming in at over S$1,200 (US$839.16)-- coupled with its small 7-inch screen and cramped keyboard, this may be a hard sell even if the display is of the touchscreen variety.

But Roan Digital has bigger problems than convincing consumers to shell out over a grand for a Netbook. Pocketables reported that the Everun Note is being recalled for various issues ranging from high-pitched fan noise to blue screen of death and an overheated processor. A worrying thought considering that markets such as Singapore will be getting their first units only later this month.

However, TrendsMobile (the distributor for Roan Digital products in Singapore) gave assurances that the recall affects the first batches which were retailed only in Korea. Shipments for the international markets should not experience any of these issues. In any case, should there be any unusual hardware issue, the unit should be referred to the local service center for diagnosis.

Hot/cold packs recalled after toxic scare

Tyco Healthcare is recalling some hot/cold surgical packs because a number of the products contain a toxic substance.

The Surgipack and Body Plus packs were recalled when a manufacturer confirmed that the packs contained toxic ethylene glycol, rather that the non-toxic ingredient propylene glycol.

Ingestion of ethylene glycol can be harmful, and initial symptoms can include drowsiness, nausea and vomiting.

People who purchased the packs are advised to return the product to the place of purchase for a refund.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is advising people not to consume three imported instant coffee products because they may contain melamine.

The three affected Mr. Brown 3-in-1 products are:

King Car Food Industrial Co. Ltd. is recalling the product in Taiwan, the agency said.

Markham, Ont.-based Thai Indochine Trading Inc., the importer, was notified of this recall by the products’ manufacturer and is voluntarily recalling the products from the marketplace, CFIA said.

The agency is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall, which is part of the government's ongoing investigation into milk and milk-derived products sourced from China that may have been distributed in Canada.

On Sunday, the CFIA warned people not to consume Nissin Cha Cha Dessert, a Chinese dessert mix, made with Yili Pure Milk that was possibly tainted with melamine.

Nearly 53,000 children have been sickened and four have died in China after being fed baby formula tainted with melamine, which is used to make plastics. Tests showed that milk powder in China contained the chemical, which has no nutritional value but was added to make the product appear higher in protein levels when tested.

Rest of Sanofi's contaminated Lovenox recalled

PARIS, Sept 23 (Reuters) - French drugmaker Sanofi-Aventis (SASY.PA) has recalled remaining batches of contaminated blood thinner Lovenox, a heparin, which were distributed before May 2008, French drug regulator Afssaps said.

Earlier this year, high levels of contamination with an oversulphated chondroitin sulphate in different types of heparin -- derived from pig intestines and used to prevent and treat blood clots -- were linked with serious side effects and deaths.

No such side effects were observed with Sanofi's Lovenox and the European Medicines Agency said in June doctors in Europe could continue to use the drug despite low levels of contamination found in some batches of the product.

"In agreement with Afssaps, the withdrawal was undertaken by Sanofi-Aventis on Sept. 16," the Afssaps said in a statement.

Lovenox is Sanofi's top-selling drug, with sales last year of 2.6 billion euros.

RICHMOND - A Richmond company is recalling a cheese spread because of the potential of salmonella contamination.

The recall involves Miss Bonnie's Jalapeno Pepper Cheese Spread, distributed between Aug. 28 and Sept. 19 and with a sell-by date of Dec. 2, 2008. No illnesses have been associated with the recall.

iPhone Plugs Being Recalled

IPhone 3G customers either have been or will be getting a text message on their better-behaved phones from Apple alerting them of a recall of the USB power adapter that comes with the phone. The adapter is a wall plug with the USB connector on the other end, so iPhone users can charge their phone from a standard power outlet.

Apple has realized there is a problem with these mini-adapters. The metal prongs can break off when removing the plug and remain in a power outlet, creating a risk of electric shock. There have been reports of the prongs breaking off on Apple enthusiast sites but so far, no one has been zapped.

Apple has already begun shipping replacement adapters with the newer iPhones. Look on the prong-side of the plug for a green dot like picture below. If you adapter has the dot, you are in the clear and do not need to go through the recall.

If not, then starting October 10, you have two choices: take the plug into one of 200 Apple retail stores and get a replacement, or mail it back to Apple by filling out an application on the Web.

Simplicity drop side cribs recalled

WASHINGTON, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of Simplicity brand drop side cribs due to an entrapment hazard.

About 600,000 of the cribs, imported from China by Simplicity Inc., of Reading, Pa., were sold at various national retail outlets from January 2005 through August 2008 for between $150 and $300, the Commission said in a statement last Wednesday.

The recall includes cribs with model numbers 8620, 8745, 8748, 8756, 8778, 8810 and 8994. The various models involved include the Aspen, Crib N Changer Combo, Gabrielle, Camille, Providence and Shenandoah.

Simplicity Inc. has received nine reports in which the drops sides on the cribs derailed from their tracks, due to a problem of incompatible hardware, the Commission said.

Consumers were advised to stop using the recalled cribs and find new sleeping arrangements for their infants. Consumers should return the cribs for refunds or store credit, the Commission said.

Battery-backup ceiling lights recalled

Washington, D.C. - Gotham Lighting is recalling about 30,000 compact fluorescent recessed ceiling lights because a relay on the backup battery can malfunction and prevent the lights from turning on in an emergency.

Only lights sold with the optional backup battery pack are included in the recall, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The lights were manufactured in the U.S. and China and sold nationwide from November 2007 through last July.

LTD Commodities' wood abacuses recalled

WASHINGTON, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- Thousands of wood abacuses made in China and sold in the United States are being recalled because they present a choking hazard, U.S. safety officials say.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the voluntary recall of abacuses imported by LTD Commodities and ABC Distributing of Bannockburn, Ill. The federal agency said in a statement Monday the educational toys have rods that can detach, creating a chocking hazard for young children.

About 6,000 were sold nationwide from December 2006 through February of this year for about $12 each.

The abacuses are part of an activity center toy that includes movable block letters with pictures, sliding shapes and a blue and yellow play clock.

Consumers were advised to take the abacus away from children and contact LTD Commodities for product credit.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the recall of Western Family-brand family variety pack instant oatmeal because of a labeling error.

The FDA said Ralston Foods initiated the recall of 14,664 cartons of the oatmeal bearing "Best If Used By" date code "DEC0409N" because the product might contain undeclared milk, posing a health hazard to people allergic to dairy products.

The recalled Western Family Variety Pack Instant Oatmeal was distributed by Western Family Foods Inc. to stores in Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. The product is packaged in cartons weighing 13.8-ounces and containing 10 packets of instant oatmeal.

El Matador Enterprises, makers of Margaritaville Tortilla Chips is voluntarily recalling 13-ounce bags of Margaritaville Island Lime Tortilla Chips because they may contain undeclared whey in the spice blend.

People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk protein run the risk of a health problem or illness if they consume this product.

The affected product was distributed through retail stores. El Matador's sales team is working with distributors to actively recover any affected product remaining on store shelves.

Hundreds of black cabs recalled after mystery fires

London Hundreds of black cabs have been recalled from the streets of London for safety checks after a series of mystery fires in the vehicles.

Transport for London (TfL) said last night that up to 600 taxis could be taken off the road if they failed to pass the checks. It comes after seven black cabs burst into flames this summer. Across the country at least 11 have caught fire.

The Public Carriage Office (PCO), which licenses hire vehicles including black cabs, has recalled all TX4 cabs – built by London Taxis International – for safety checks.

A TfL spokeswoman said: “London Taxis International informed the PCO of a number of underbonnet fires in TX4 taxis with a 56 registration. The manufacturer is recalling all TX4s in this registration for investigation and a thorough safety check of the vehicles’ engines, which must be carried out within two weeks.”

Tfl will suspend the licence of any cab that does not pass its inspection by the deadline.

Oroweat wheat bread recalled due to nuts

A voluntary recall of Oroweat 100% Whole Wheat Bread has been initiated because it may contain tree nuts not listed on the label, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment announced today.

The bread was baked at the Denver plant of Bimbo Bakeries USA and sold at most major retail grocery locations in five states, according to Mark Salley, spokesman for the state health department. The five states are Colorado, Iowa, Wyoming, Nebraska and New Mexico.

An Oroweat representative said that all the affected products — which have red, blue or tan closure tabs with a "Best By" date of Sept. 22, Sept. 23 or Sept. 25 on the tab — are being pulled from retail grocery shelves across Colorado.

No other Oroweat products are involved in the recall.

Salley said no illness have been reported.

The recall was necessary because Oroweat Health Nut bread was inadvertently placed in Oroweat 100% Whole Wheat Bread packaging. The 100% Whole Wheat ingredient label does not indicate the presence of nuts.

Consumers not allergic to tree nuts can eat the bread. Consumers can return the product to the store where it was purchased for an exchange or refund.

Soccer goals recalled after child's death

WASHINGTON (AP) — About 190,000 MacGregor and Mitre folding soccer goals were recalled Tuesday, after the death of a young child.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said a 20-month-old boy from Texas was strangled when his head and arm became entangled in the net of one of the recalled goals.

The agency received one other report of a child's head becoming entangled in a net.

The gaps in the recalled nets are about 20 square inches, which is a dangerous size according to the CPSC. The agency says netting should have gaps less than 17 square inches or greater than 28 square inches, to prevent dangerous entrapment and strangulation.

The Chinese-made goals were distributed by Regent Sports Corp. of Hauppauge, N.Y., and sold by sports and hardware stores nationwide, including Wal-Mart and Ace Hardware. They were available between May 2002 and May 2008.

Parents and caregivers are advised to stop using the nets, which can be returned to Regent Sports in exchange for a free, safe replacement. For more information, call 877-516-9707.

Wegmans-brand store-baked bagels recalled

WASHINGTON, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the recall of more than 1,000 cases of Wegmans-brand store-baked bagels because of possible contamination.

The FDA said the in-store-baked bagels and bialys were sold in Wegmans' 71 supermarket bakery departments in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia and Maryland between Aug. 24 and Sept. 9. The recall does not involve Wegmans-brand packaged bagels sold in the stores' dairy or frozen food departments.

Wegman Food Markets Inc. said it initiated the recall because the dough used to make the bagels might have contained pieces of a metal spring that broke in a mixer at the company's central bakeshop in Rochester, N.Y., posing a potential choking hazard.

Feds warns Ford owners about recalled vehicles

WASHINGTON (AP) — The government is urging owners of 5 million recalled Ford vehicles to bring them to dealerships to repair a cruise control switch system that has been tied to engine fires.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Tuesday issued a second consumer advisory to owners of certain unrepaired Ford, Lincoln and Mercury sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks, vans and passenger cars who have not responded to previous recalls.

NHTSA said about 12 million vehicles have been part of the recall and nearly 5 million still have not been fixed. A similar warning was issued in February but officials said the rate of the vehicles being repaired has declined.

The recalls have affected Ford's popular F-Series pickup trucks and led to hundreds of complaints and dozens of lawsuits over engine fires.

Ford spokesman Wes Sherwood said the Dearborn, Mich., company supported the effort to communicate with owners. He said owners have received several recall notices but "the return rate has been lower than expected or hoped (for)."

Dealers have installed a fused wiring harness into the speed control electrical system as part of the recall, and the government said replacement parts are available. Owners can take their vehicle to a dealer to have the cruise control deactivated until the parts arrive.

NHTSA issued a lengthy list of older vehicles covered by the consumer advisory, including 1993-2004 Ford F150 trucks, 1994-2002 F250 through F550 Super Duty trucks with gasoline engines, and 1998-2001 Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer SUVs, which were among the best-selling vehicles in the nation during those years.

Worldwise Inc. issues voluntary recall after receiving five reports of injury.

Worldwise Inc. has issued a voluntary recall of about 223,000 SlyDog Retractable Dog Leashes after receiving five reports of injuries, including facial cuts, a broken tooth, displaced eye lens, and a bruised collar bone.

Those who have a SlyDog retractable leash with a metal clasp should stop using the product immediately. The company said the metal clasp connecting the leash to a dog’s collar can bend or break while in use, causing the leash to recoil unexpectedly.

The leash has a handle composed of a blue plastic case with a black plastic grip. The leash is made of a black woven strap and measures approximately one-half inch wide. The SlyDog retractable leashes with a plastic clasp are not included in this recall.

The leases were sold through Dollar General stores nationwide from September 2007 through August 2008 for about $5.
